Modeling is fun and glamorous. It also draws predators, stalkers, and scammers. Treat safety as a skill, not an afterthought.
Before You Say Yes
- Tell a friend or family member where you’re shooting, who with, and when you’re expected back.
- Vet new photographers: check their portfolio, ask who else they’ve shot, and ask directly about pay, usage rights, and what the shoot involves.
- Real names get exchanged before a shoot, not after. Reluctance on either side is a red flag.
- Confirm the location, time, and shot list in advance. Never as a last-minute surprise.
At the Shoot
- Consider bringing a chaperone. Keep them low-key; a disruptive one can cost you future bookings.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, it’s okay to walk away.
Online and Afterward
- Expect trolling and stalking on social media, pseudonym or not. Plan for it in advance.
- If a deal sounds too good to be true, such as instant stardom for one free “test” shoot or a fee to move you along, it’s a scam.
- Modeling can take a real toll mentally. Taking a break when you need one is maintenance, not failure.
